The article analyzes the works of N.A. Teffi, published in 1920–1921 in the Paris
newspaper Svobodnye Mysli. Taffy followed the traditions laid down during her
collaboration in the Svobodnye Mysli in St. Petersburg in 1907–1908, and at the same
time changed her works, reacting to current events. The article examines Teffi’s works
both in the context of newspaper publications and in a broader literary, journalistic,
and historical context. In the first issues, Teffi continues to “fictionalizing” current
news topics, creating fiction images, and not direct journalism. But starting from the
fifth issue, the publicist intention prevails in Teffi’s works published in the Svobodnye
Mysli. Identification and at the same time distance between the author’s “I” and the first
person’s voice become one of the important features of Teffi’s poetics in the first years
of emigration. Before the revolution, self-irony rather helped to merge the author’s and
narrative “I,” and in emigration sarcasm prevents such identification.
